What is paid SEM?
Paid SEM (search engine marketing) is the practice of advertising on search engines through auction-based platforms like Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising, where advertisers bid on keywords and pay each time a user clicks on their ad. Strictly speaking, SEM is the broader category that includes both paid search and organic SEO, and "paid SEM" is simply the redundant long-form way of specifying the paid side. In most industry usage, "SEM" and "paid search" are used interchangeably even though technically SEM is the umbrella term. Paid SEM works best for commercial intent queries where the searcher is actively evaluating or ready to buy, because the cost-per-click economics require high conversion rates to produce a positive return. It tends to underperform for awareness-stage marketing, where demand generation channels like LinkedIn Ads or content marketing do the upstream work of building familiarity before a buyer starts searching.
